And the ending that works more like an epilogue of sorts, feels exactly like the ending of Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension, with another demon loose in the world. The last minutes are the only ones that could be considered as true horror because they are trying to escape while being chased by this entity. There's something demonic at the end of the road, and in this case it looks too much like Tristana Medeiros from the REC series. Even with its short duration, the paranoia the film tries to induce is not functional because six previous films have already prepared you for everything you could expect in this franchise, and this tale never tries to do something new.

But that's the only decent thing it tries to emulate, the rest of it, is the same, tedious, repetitive and generic search for answers, from the characters who got into the situation in which they are simply because the script arranged like that, and therefore now they must face the consequences of their ineptitude. Only this time we're in the present, and both the tone and atmosphere of this story are clearly inspired by horror movies like The Witch, It Happens At Night, Apostle, and more like them. Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin plays with some different rules, but the focus continues within the cults, witches, and demons.

But what are your favorite movies in the franchise? Let me know in the comments section below. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.īy quality merits, this is without a doubt the best looking movie of this franchise. But as a whole, I still love the franchise dearly and I’m looking forward to Paranormal Activity 7, whenever that comes out. Overall, the first 3 Paranormal Activity movies are great, and the next 3 are… not so great. But it’s also the most fun movie in the franchise, and the one that explores the mythology the best in the series. Yes, there are more jump scares in this one than the previous 2, and yes, it kind of plays up the ‘80s vibe a bit too much. All of the films after 3 explored too much of Katie’s history, but this one gives just enough to make it all work. I just love the overall tone of this one. We learn that Katie and Kristi have been haunted ever since they were children by a ghost named Toby, and that the ghost has been following them ever since. It’s chronologically the first in the series, since it concerns Kristi and Katie from Paranormal Activity 1 and 2 as children in the ’80s, and it has the best scares in the entire franchise. While some weren’t completely enamored by Part 3 in the franchise, for me, it’s my absolute favorite. But as a fan of the series, it’s one of the more passable movies in the franchise. If I wasn’t a fan of the series, I probably wouldn’t like this one since it’s pretty ho hum as a horror movie. But the film is very typical of 'real' hauntings, in which the ghosts never do anything obviously paranormal or unexplainable. It also does a better job of mixing in the past mythos than The Ghost Dimension or the clumsy Part 4 did. The horror film Paranormal Activity is realistic in some ways. Not since the second movie did I find myself laughing as much as I did with this one, as the characters are, at the very least, interesting. Now, granted, this is probably the least scary out of the entire series, but that’s fine. It’s about an 18-year-old who starts messing around with witchcraft after the death of his neighbor downstairs, and how he becomes a “marked one,” which gives him powers from the dark side. Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones has an almost entirely Latino cast and an interesting setting in Oxnard, California. Those who stuck around long enough after Part 4 were greeted with something that was a little unique for the series. Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones (2014)
